About the Authors Thomas Denes competes in Masters swimming competitions at both the national international levels, placing in events as diverse as the 50 meter freestyle and the 2 mile open water swim. Denes lives and trains in Montgomery County, Maryland, where he is founder and president of the Montgomery Ancient Mariners, a United States Masters swimming club. He is the author of The Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes. He is a contributor to Swim Magazine. Desiree Ficker is a professional triathlete and duathlete who has been competing in multisport since 1999. She was the national Age Group Champion in 1999 and 2000 and placed second in her age group in the 2000 Ironman Hawaii. As a first year pro, she finished ninth at US Pro Nationals and was named 2001 Professional Triathlete Rookie of the Year by USA Triathlon. In 2002, she won Powerman Alabama, Dannon Florida, Dannon Everette and the Blackwater Traverse duathlons. In 2006, she placed second in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. In March 2007 she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials with a time of 2:40:28. She lives and trains in Austin, Texas.
